I just read this in Forbes today:
Dennis FitzSimons' six-month reign as chairman of Tribune Co. has been a tumultuous one. The mayhem continued Monday when its namesake Chicago Tribune failed to put out a full-edition newspaper for the first time since the catastrophic Chicago Fire in 1871. This latest calamity under FitzSimons, caused by a software upgrade that crashed printing operations ....
Don't you feel for this poor guy?
Of course I have mixed emotions because I worked for The Chicago Sun-Times after I graduated from college in Minnesota. Roger Ebert and I began work there the same month (!) Walt Disney died that summer and Roger's obituary shot him to stardom. He had just graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana, I believe. So now you know how old I am!!! Roger took me Irish pub crawling one night and we shared some good times together as rookies on the paper.
I worked for Bill Mauldin, the Pulitzer prize winning nationally syndicated cartoonist. I also tagged along with the drama, ballet and movie critics to all the exciting things happening in Chicago at that time.
I left to marry my ex-husband and we moved to Coronado, California.
