In an interesting debate which would not take place in America, The British House of Lords ... has rejected an outright ban on smacking children, and backed a compromise allowing parents to resort to "mild smacking". Parents could be prosecuted if they cause 'actual bodily harm'.

Smacking is banned if it causes bruises, scratches, reddening of the skin, mental harm or if implement used .

Hmmmm, a difficult area. I normally am against all forms of physical anything but when I worked in the gang-infested areas of National City and saw what boys are like who feel no fear or respect of or for anyone or anything and due to having been raised by adoring or intimidated mothers, with no threat of corporeal punishment to persuade the little darlings to mend their ways and try acts of kindness instead or mayhem, well, I had to rethink this.
