[click book cover to order from amazon] This is a terrific book to get your feet wet understanding the history and setting of the current situation in the Middle East. I love to learn but I love a book to be well written, too -- and this book fits the criteria. It is a very easy read. In fact I could hardly put it down. Kaplan is a terrific writer.

[click book cover to order from amazon] Here's a book that will horrify and intrigue, that's for sure. It came out a couple of years ago but if you didn't get around to reading it yet, like me, it's a really fascinating read. I don't eat junk food, don't own a tv and likely won't change my lifestyle as a result of reading this book but it confirms my beliefs and observations about the influence of these things on American culture. It is a well written, even humorous at times, book and a great summer read. Especially for Californians, I think. It helps us understand where we came from in terms of placement in this century, in this continent.
