Ready to see an excellent movie? Fog of War is the new documentary about Robert McNamara and his years as Secretary of Defense, including Viet Nam. This is the official website, CLICK HERE. The man is 85 years old, still bright and enthusiastic. There is good footage of Kennedy and Johnson. A new kind of camera is used which permits Mr. McNamara to look directly into the camera (at the audience).Monday, February 09, 2004

This is a great article about fruit drinks. I have suspected this for a long time. They are the worst and do a great deal toward making kids fat, the gift you give them for a lifetime (!!)The Dirty Little Secret of Fruit Drinks
This is from an article promoting the book
FATLAND: HOW AMERICANS BECAME THE FATTEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD
Drink too many "healthy" fruit drinks, and you'll get fat. They are no more nutritious than carbonated soft drinks. After water, the No. 1 ingredient in most so-called fruit drinks, including Gatorade, V8, Minute Maid, CapriSun, and Sunny Delight, is some form of sugar--sucrose, fructose, glucose, or sorbitol, reports The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. While most of these drinks are packed with good vitamins, they are so full of sugar they could do more harm than good, especially for children.
If you give up this one thing, you'll shed pounds. Really.
The Star-Telegram says the most prevalent nutrient is simple carbohydrates, which just add empty calories that contribute not only to weight gain, but also tooth decay. The worst offender on the list of sugar ingredients is fructose, which is sometimes listed as high fructose corn syrup. Because of the way it is metabolized and used by the liver, it can raise the level of triglycerides in the blood. High fructose corn syrup is the primary sweetener in soda and most fruit drinks. Greg Critser, author of "Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People In the World," told The Star-Telegram that corn syrup can set off a reaction that ultimately causes our bodies to store more fat. And that makes us put on the pounds--even kids.
What can you do? Read the labels. They will tell you what you need to know and will fully indicate if the drink is "not a significant source of saturated fat, cholesterol, or dietary fiber." Some labels will even point out there is no vitamin A, calcium, or iron in the drink, and others will clearly indicate "no fruit juice" or "0 percent fruit juice." Also, look for products that are 100 percent fruit juice or reconstituted juice.
Find out more about high fructose corn syrup and why it makes us fat.
MORE COMMENTS:
You reap what you sow. According to Critser, a leading journalist on health and obesity, America about 30 years ago went crazy sowing corn. Determined to satisfy an American public that "wanted what it wanted when it wanted it," agriculture secretary Earl Butz determined to lower American food prices by ending restrictions on trade and growing. The superabundance of cheap corn that resulted inspired Japanese scientists to invent a cheap sweetener called "high fructose corn syrup." This sweetener made food look and taste so great that it soon found its way into everything from bread to soda pop. Researchers ignored the way the stuff seemed to trigger fat storage.
In his illuminating first book (which began life as a cover story for Harper's Magazine), Critser details what happened as this river of corn syrup (and cheap, lardlike palm oil) met with a fast-food marketing strategy that prized sales-via supersized "value" meals-over quality or conscience.
The surgeon general has declared obesity an epidemic.
About 61% of Americans are now overweight-20% of us are obese. Type 2 (i.e., fat-related) diabetes is exploding, even among children. Critser vividly describes the physical suffering that comes from being fat.He shows how the poor become the fattest, victimized above all by the lack of awareness.

Critser's book is a good first step in rectifying that. In vivid prose conveying the urgency of the situation, with just the right amount of detail for general readers, Critser tells a story that they won't be able to shake when they pass the soda pop aisle in the supermarket. This book should attract a wide readership.

This is actually pretty amazing. It includes the Great Apologies of the Era ... can you name them? Well, Janet Jackson to start with. then Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, Hugh Grant (adorable Hugh Grant did such a bad thing!) ... and others, some better than the rest. Give it a try. GREAT APOLOGIES VIDEO
Smoking Ban in the UK is the article, but the reason it's here is this quote: "Different personality types smoke for different reasons. Introverts use cigarettes as a social crutch to make them feel less shy and enhance their social skills, says Joseph, while neurotic smokers and the depressed use smoking to control negative feelings."
Well, that's a sweeping statement of nonsense. The article also makes a common mistake in confusing introverts with shy people. Introverts and introverts. We aren't shy. Usually not the least bit.
But it's great the UK is beginning to see the light. It should be a lot more comfortable traveling there soon.
YOU CAN HEAL YOURSELF
The Healing Power of Illness: The Meaning of Symptoms and How to Interpret Them is an outstanding book by Thorwald Dethlefsen regarding physical ailments, diseases and conditions in the human body. Here are some of the reviews from amazon.comNow I don't need to write my book anymore. It is already written, and probably much better...
Rather than blocking or destroying illness, we can learn from it. Paradoxical, yes. Give a minute of your thoughts to this affirmation. Our body is just showing us the way we were unable to follow in our free consciousness. Learn from your illness, then your illness becomes useless and fades away. Illness represents the last opportunity for evolution. Whatever you do for healing, pay simultaneous attention to the only true healing. Take the challenge!
* * *
This book is for the brave few, who want to know why something happens to them , why they get diseases, how to interpret them, and more importantly to take ownership and responsibility for their illness, rather than blaming germs, viruses, genes and the like.
* * *
The style of the authors is about the best that I have ever read, honest, blunt, and to the point.
A must book for the few people who are ready to look within.

For those who find meaning in the books of Louise Hay and other "heal yourself" thinkers, this seminal work may come as a surprise. Originally published in German in 1983, it is in fact the forerunner of many books written in the '90s about the mind/body connection. Deeper and more powerful than the more popular works, it is a perfect gem. When you read about the influence of the mind on our various body systems, you will instantly recognize the symptoms and connecting psychology of your friends, your family, and even yourself. There's more than theory here, too - you'll find questions that will have you re-examining every concept you ever had about illness.
* * *
This book is for select few, who are willing to see reality as reality - not fantasy. It deals with how mental inclinations lead to illness and shows means to have power over illness.

Are you overwhelmed by illness in your family or frightened by the possibilities in your future? Here is a book that puts you in a place of power, often by shocking you into a greater reality about why people get sick and what can be done to avoid this or to heal. whatever the condition.
Written in the Nordic vein, that is to say, pulling no punches, this book can be an empowering tool for enlightenment and self healing. It sure knocked some sense in to me when I read Dethlefsen's "Challenge of Fate" some fifteen years ago.

I heard this on public radio today ... a judge who makes people arrested for noise pollution listen to opera. That's what I call making the punishment fit the crime.State: Soothing the savage stereos This same principle applies when strip shopping centers and 7-11s in the "bad" part of town play classical music. The street people can't stand it and move on.

It is a sorry comment on the world we are living in that Janet Jackson's flash has just become the most searched for item on the giant search engine lycos. The previous holder of that dubious honor was the event, 911. Yuch and unbelievable. MSNBC - Janet Jackson's flash tops Web searches

Introverts unite against cell phone discourtesy.
Extroverts get energy from phone chat. They can be seen leaving their driveways at 7 in the morning, beginning the chat for the drive in to work. They can be seen walking the aisles of the grocery store ("Do we need milk? No. Do we meed bread? No. Now I'm at the meat counter ... do we need meat?") and in line at the bank and movie theater.
Extroverts love talking on their cells. It makes them feel important and gives them the attention they crave.
But we have a right to private space in public as well. Celltalk is a hybrid cousin to smalltalk, another thing we find extremely draining and unnecessary. Let's speak up for our rights by reminding extroverts -- with a finger to your mouth (shhh, please) like children ... "Please! You're talking too loud! Could you please keep it down in public?"
Sometimes they do. Sometimes they get defensive. But at least we raised some consciousness. Let's reminds extroverts that they are sharing public space and could perhaps be more considerate.
