Nancy R. Fenn is the nation's Saturn Return Expert
Here's one of the reasons I'm so fascinated with the Saturn Return. Just as John Nash married, had a child and lost his "beautiful mind" at his Saturn Retirn, it appears that the Wichita killer Dennis Rader married, had a child and committed his first crime (not necessarily in that order) right around the time of his first Saturn Return.
Not everyone has such a negative experience at their Saturn Return but it is a time when we may experience more stress than at any other time in life. Stress can affect people in very dramatic ways, psychological stress as well as emotional, mental and physical.
More interesting perhaps, to those of us who are interested in the psychology of serial killers, is that Dennis Rader is turning 60 on March 9, a few days from now. Rader is just now experiencing his second Saturn Return, which takes places between 58-60 years old. You might say the pressure built up again and he tripped himself up to be discovered and punished. This completes a grisly 30-year cycle.
To quote from the New York Times, "Investigators say that Mr. Rader, who will turn 60 on Wednesday, almost certainly in the solitary jail cell where he has been held since he was charged last week with 10 counts of murder, is one of the nation's most notorious and elusive serial killers, the strangler who toyed with Wichita for three decades in letters and poems and packages and who long ago insisted that the public call him B.T.K., for his preferred method [of killing]: bind, torture, kill."
Rader married a nice girl in 1971. On Jan. 15, 1974, B.T.K. struck Wichita for the first time. Rader was 29, just beginning his first Saturn Return.
See RADER'S CHART and the chart at the time of the FIRST KILLING.
Rader's Saturn is at 3 degrees Saturn. Transiting Saturn first hit that degree in September 1973. It went retrograde at that degree during November and December 1973. The first killing occured in January. Also at this time Uranus was transiting opposite his Venus.
Rader's first child was born in 1975, another in 1978.
In June 2003 Saturn was again at 3 degrees of Saturn and Rader's second Saturn Return began. It was in January 2004 that the Wichita Eagle published an article on the 30th anniversary of the unsolved crimes and Rader began to more or less beg to be caught, sending letters and other clues to police that led to his arrest.
In July 2004 Saturn was on Rader's North Node.
When commiting his first crime, Pluto was almost partile (on the degree of) his Neptune. At time of arrest, Jupiter was opposing his Sun and Uranus was square his natal Uranus. I leave the transits simple because when I was learning astrology I used to hate to read long complicated minutiae about transits. I agree with Rob Hand who once said (to paraphrase): At the time of a major event, yes, this asteroid may be doing something and that asteroid may be doing something and Mercury and Mars may be flitting about but also Saturn just hit your North Node and that's the end of it.
The more astrology I know, the simpler I keep it, so I mention here only the first and second Saturn Returns which are terribly significant and a few other transits. My point in writing this article is to teach you about the kind of psychological stress people ... you, me and others ... are under during the Saturn Returns and to indicate how the dots may be connected with thirty years intervening.
In Rader's chart, the natal Mars opposition Pluto can be an indicator of rape and violence, either perpetrator or victim, but of course there are plenty of people with that placement who don't go out and B.T.K.
I hate to be prosaic about it, but this does look like he could have Scorpio Rising. If he was born shortly after midnight, how fitting, this could give him an 8th house Saturn and North Node with a 2nd house Capricorn Moon.
The profile of his crimes suggests birth trauma involving the umbilical chord. (Mars in the 3rd trine Uranus in the 7th). I'd welcome any other guesses as to the Rising sign. He certainly has the penetrating beady little eyes of a Scorp Rising -- however the neck of a Taurus rising and necks are something he was quite fond of.
