BEFUDDLED ABOUT NETWORKING
AS AN INTROVERT?

HAROLD (not his real name) ON NETWORKING

Harold owns a construction company in a resort town in Michigan.

Of particular interest to me is networking, which I used to hate.  I have gotten especially good at it in spite of my introverted self (many people even think that I am an extrovert).

As you noted with most introverts, integrity is crucial to me.  I am not very good at playing a role.  Unfortunately, I own a construction business in a small resort town on Lake Michigan.  Networking is the most effective form of advertising.  The only way I find work is to be "out there" in the community.  This is obviously a challenge for someone like me.

So, how do I "get out there" and still be true to myself?  After years of trying to be more outgoing and not having any success, it finally dawned on
me that people were more comfortable dealing with people that they see regularly.  The key phrase is "see regularly."  That does not mean you have
to be a loud, excessively friendly, back slapper.

To be successful, I need to be comfortable in the environment.  I am very selective about where I network.  I make daily breakfast appearances at
several restaurants where builders hang out.  I go to the lumber yards for material for the crew myself.  I go to local trade shows.  I go to some real estate business functions (but don't stay long).  I go to golf outings and other places where I can just be me. I am very comfortable in all these places.

When I do have direct dealings with people, I am my true self - quiet, reserved, honest and full of integrity.  People know that when I talk to them it is because I have something to say - and they respect that.

I am lucky, because my feeling side is extroverted.  I am genuinely concerned about the people that work with me.  I have built a reputation on
fairness and integrity.  My business associates know that they don't have to waste alot of time bullshitting me and going over detail after detail for them to get the job.  I don't bother them when they work - in fact I often inspect the job after everyone has gone Home.  I don't hog the limelight when the job is done, and subcontractors get lots of praise from our
clients.  Every one is happy.

Works for me.....
