Dear Mrs. Garrett,
You are probably receiving many expressions of sympahty
about your husband, but I would like to take the time
to share my personal memories of him with you.
When I was a fledgling business reporter in 1973, one
of my first assignments was to interview Mr.Garrett
about his appointment to the Securities & Exchange
Commission. Interviewing new appointees is a notoriously
difficult journalistic assignment, because generally
they are reluctant to talk about a new job before they
are "on board". I was therefore quite surprised
when your husband granted me an interview before he
took over the position and did his best to say as much
as he could about the issues affecting the securities
industry.
Since then I have interviewed Mr. Garrett over the telephone
on serveral occasions, and while I am certain that he
didn't remember me, he never failed to extend the same
kindness and helpfulness.
Even though our relationship was on a supposedly impersonal
business level, I have fond memories of Mr. Garrett
and I empathize with your loss. I am sure that my own
father's premature death at the age of 61 has something
to do with that as well.
My sympathies are extended to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Dennis Chase
