THERE ARE FOUR ASPECTS TO COMMUNICATION ... TALKING, LISTENING, READING and WRITING.
Introverts excel at three of these. Extroverts excel at talking.
"Perfect example: I'm in the bathroom at work standing at a urinal, doing my business.  If someone walks in - another introvert - they will just do their business and leave.  If an extrovert - like one of the sales guys - walks in - immediately conversation ensues.  'How bout those Mets?' type conversation.  Drives me berzerk." --Troy

"I believe it's easier for women, since they aren't expected to take the initiative, but for a man, being an introvert is a nightmare. I have a marked difficulty maintaining "frivolous" conversations, it just doesn't come naturally and is a source of stress for me when I'm subjected to it by the extroverted world around me. FROM A MESSAGE BOARD
"Hello, I'm new to this board. Not only am I an introvert, I'm also painfully shy.
I have been advised by  a therapist that I should practice socializing with people,
but I really hate doing this.  I don't know even know where to go to socialize with peole.
Are any of you into socializing? I even hate small talk. I am content observing people,
I don't enjoy talking to them, unless I have to. Can any of you relate to this or am I weird?
Do you know of places where one meets people to socialize?
This might sound like a stupid question. I appreciate any answers. Thanks." -- Anonymous
NOTE FROM NANCY ON THIS LAST ONE ... TIME FOR A NEW THERAPIST! Talking therapy
is a field that attracts many feeling and perceptive types who have a strong value bias for relating
to others. They have an intimacy model that sometimes doesn't work well in the real world.
For example, you may not be a "people person". INTJs and INTPs for example have little use
for people other than as resources for part of an overall strategy. Check the bias of your therapist
before you swallow everything whole. It's YOUR therapy. Choose wisely and question authority :-).
