Lesson Two

discovery

What Type are You?

There are eight different types of introverts. If you know your specific type from having taken a Myers-Briggs or other personality inventory, please skip to Part Two.

If you don't already know what specific type you are, please go to Keirsey Temperament Theory to find out. You will have to pay $14.95 to get the full and specific results from this test. Please let me know if this is a hardship.

Read about your type in the report you will receive and see what you think.

Please email me with the results of the test, telling me what your specific type is.

There are eight different types of introverts. Please look up your type by clicking on the red links. Read about this personality type and browse through the rest of the site if it interests you.

These are the eight different types. Keirsey has given the different types names. Myers Briggs uses another set. Actually, you can make up your own. What is important is the indicator of the letters which mean:

i = introvert | s = sensor | f = feeling | j = judgment
t = thinking | p = perceptive | n = intuitive

  ISTJ The Inspector

  ISFJ The Protector

  ISTP The Crafter

  ISFP The Composer

  INFJ The Counselor

  INFP The Healer

  INTJ The Mastermind

 INTP The Architect

There are many different approaches to personality typing. Keirsey is one of the most popular, along with the Myers-Briggs (MBTI®). The Myers-Briggs is considerably more expensive to take. Keirsey on the other hand, is very user-friendly and affordable. Keirsey also has a popular book out called Please Understand Me. When I participate in the introvert chat forums, people are talking enthusiastically about this book.

All personality typing is based on the theories of Carl Jung. According to Daryl Sharp's Jung Lexicon, "Jung's model of typology grew out of an extensive historical review of the type question in literature, mythology, aesthetics, philosophy and psychopathology. Whereas earlier classifications were based on observations of temperamental or physiological behavior patterns, Jung's model is concerned with the movement of energy and the way in which one habitually or preferentially orients oneself in the world."

If you would like to learn more about Dr. Jung, please click here. If you become more interested, you can put Jung in a search engine and explore for yourself. The important thing to remember is that not all psychologists and psychotherapists endorse the theory of personality types or, indeed, the theories of Carl Jung. Jung is an INFJ Counselor type of introvert and if you read about this type INFJ, you will discover that they are so intuitive, it is difficult for others to follow their mental travels who aren't intuitive.

Personality typing has also been associated with some negatives uses but we won't be using it that way in this course.

feedback

Send me an email with your thoughts and feelings about your type of introvert. This can be as long or as short as you like. Longer is better. This is about you and finding out about yourself. Quick answers don't plumb the depths like a longer, considered answer. This is time you are investing in learning about yourself, your thoughts and feelings. I would recommend at least two pages of reaction. Please be assured that there is no "correct" answer to your reaction. Your reaction is your reaction and as such it will be perfect for purposes of self understanding. You can also reply in another art form if that is a more comfortable form of self expression.

Here are some questions to stimulate your thought processes or perceptive processes.

Does your type sound like you?

Do you like the description you read about your type?

Did you identify any heroes or heroines among those Keirsey mentioned as having the same type as yourself?

What parts of the description do you agree or disagree with?

If there is another type that seems more like you, please tell me about this and react to that type instead.

Do you think the test was accurate or do you feel like the results could change if you took it again?

association

Not all theorists agree on the types of all personalities, but generally they do. Here are some famous (and infamous) people listed in each category. Please do a search of one of the people in your own category by putting their name in a search engine. Read about their life and give me some ways in which this person is like and unlike you. You can comment in any way you like for this exercise. If you already know about the person, of course you don't need to look further than your own memories and experiences of their lives.

ISTJ The Inspector - Warren Buffett, Harry Truman, Queen Elizabeth II

ISFJ The Protector - Jimmy Stewart, Mother Theresa
ISTP The Crafter - Katherine Hepburn, Michael Douglas, Bruce Lee, Michael Jordan

ISFP The Composer - Johnny Carson, Barbara Streisand, Cher, Jackie Kennedy, Mozart, Steven Spielberg

INFJ The Counselor - Carl Jung, Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jane Goodall

INFP The Healer - Mia Farrow, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Anne Lindbergh

INTJ The Mastermind - Ayn Rand, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sir Isaac Newton, Niels Bohr

INTP The Architect - Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Adam Smith

Please explain how this person could be a role model for you.

real life

This week, let yourself be inspired by the people on these lists. Think about the kind of contribution you could make to the world if you could be yourself and do it your way.

If you have negative thoughts, such as "who, me?" replace them with a positive thought. Begin to imagine a world that works for you. What are your needs? How did these people get the time and space they needed? How did they take the world on their own terms to win. If they could do it, you can do it, too.

This week, ask yourself if you are willing to be "different". Go to the REAL PEOPLE section and read comments by real live introverts today who have also gone through the process of self discovery.
