TODAY'S QUESTION

From Annabelle in Paris, France

"I just today started looking on the Internet for some information about introverts. Why? Because my boyfriend and I have just finished arguing, for the umpteenth time, about my not needing, wanting, or getting satisfaction from socializing. He thinks there’s something seriously wrong with me and just can’t grasp that I don’t share his juvenile (okay, a little jab at the boyfriend there) desperation for socializing much less the fact that it bores me to tears to make small talk and tires me.

"I’m sure you are familiar with all of the argument refrains so I won’t bore you with the details. But I just wanted to tell you that when I read your article (I’m an INFP too) I nearly cried!

"I had no idea until this afternoon that there are more of me out there!! In fact, I didn’t know I could legitimatize my personality as introverted and this alone gives me great relief. So much of what you said about your experiences growing up are like mine!

"Why is it that so many people just can’t sit in their own skins? Sometimes I feel like everyone is just tumbling through his or her lives “unexamined”. (I’ll bet Socrates was an introvert too…)

"I hope now I can begin to amass more information to pass on to my boyfriend to read…oh wait, he NEVER reads. (pathetic, isn’t it?) (jab jab jab)

"Just one last thing, I too wanted to be a doctor and tested well for the profession, but it was the same type of remarks that deflated my self-confidence and made me choose not to follow that dream. It was my choice I know, but I wonder how many other choices in my life I have made in error as a result of being just, different.

"Thanks for telling your story. M aybe to you it wasn’t a big deal, but please know that for at least one person, it meant the world."
