Dear
Ginger,
Upon returning to this country yesterday, I picked up
a Wall Street Journal at the airport and thereupon learned
of Ray's sudden passing. I wish I could be with you
today to speak to you personally.
It
is widely know that Ray was a man of fierce loyalty
to his nation and dedication to his profession. He served
both with distinction and honor. But these are not my
memories. Mine are those of a friend and teacher. During
my seven years at Gardner Carton Douglas, Ray taught
me to think analytically, write professionally, and
remain of good humor.
While Ray was achieving greatness, he simultaneously
taught the rest of us with a kind, measured demeanor.
Few men posses such rare abilities and fewer still choose
to employ them. His legacy is in the minds of all of
us he taught so well, and we will honor him by trying
to teach those who follow us with this friendship and
understanding he gave so freely to us.
Sincerely,
Jim Reynolds
